Budget travel, holidays, and passionate travel writing

Christmas, holidays, and budget travel - my travel writing niche? (Flickr)

While I am not traveling around the world right now, life has been an adventure.  With all the research and travel writing I have done on holiday travel, cheap flights, travel tips, and budget travel deals, the last two weeks have been a blur.  20 articles, 5 blog posts, and LOTS of hours researching and writing.

I don’t even want to think about the sleep I have sacrificed.  On some nights, I have been so tired, I fell asleep in my son’s room while my wife was reading stories to him before bed.  Honestly, I can’t complain though.  This has been an adrenaline high.  I know I will come off of it soon and crash and burn.

I know budget travel is something I focus on.  However, this holiday airfare stuff for Thanksgiving and Christmas has been a lot of fun.  I guess it takes into account my desire to save money, my love for researching and problem solving, a focus on the details, and my passion to share this information with others about travel.

Yesterday, I wrote one of my favorite, and most difficult articles, I’ve ever written – 6 travel tips to find the cheapest flights.  A number of people have already read it, commented, and added to what I wrote.  However, writing that just energized me for the entire day.  As a result of those tips, I have had two people ask me to try and find flights for them (a mini travel agent!).  And I LOVE that challenge!

While my love for travel and what I like to write about is expansive, it’s been a joy to find my niche with holiday, budget travel information, and travel tips.  While I love covering a variety of topics in travel, these are some of the things I like writing about the most.

Don’t get me wrong – I always look forward to traveling.  Hiking in Tahoe last weekend was tiring but refreshing and it’s nice to have local trips like that.  However, travel writing about things like budget travel, holidays, cheap flights, and travel tips can be just as exhilarating if you find your niche and are passionate about it.

What’s my message?  Whatever inspires you when traveling, go for it!  If you like adventure travel, the outdoors, islands and beaches, just do what you love and are good at.  All of us have different personalities, experiences, and interests.  If you write or blog about your travels, focus on your strengths and incorporate that into your travel writing (Andy Hayes has a great post about this here).

For all of us, it’s finding the niche that fuels our passion.  Do that and you can’t go wrong.

It’s all about finding your niche. That is how we all thrive. Love what you do and you can’t go wrong. I’m excited for you that you are living your passion. There is nothing more exhilarating and losing sleep over it is never a problem. I wish you all the best with everything you are doing, though I doubt you’ll need it!

I’m amazed at your productivity– you have been publishing so many great travel articles lately for Examiner. No wonder you are falling asleep at story time! Thanks for doing the research and finding the great deals for us readers.

Leslie and Caz, thanks for your comments. I admit that writing has been a working in progress to figure out my niche. I’ve know budget travel is something I’ve always been interested in but it’s been a process to see how that has evolved in my writing. Thanks for your encouragement and only people people are interested and enjoy what I have to share.

I’ve learned so much from the writing of others, including both of you, and have enjoyed reading all the travel writing and blogging that is out there.

What you have mentioned above are the things that inspires me – adventure travel, the outdoors, islands and beaches. Anyone on earth would really love to travel a lot, the only problem is this thing called money. Of course, saving is a part of your travelling plan. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas.
