Travel Tuesday question of the week and an idea

July 28, 2010
by budgettravelsac

Unfortunately, it’s been too long since I’ve posted.  There are plenty of excuses to throw around – off work for two weeks and virtually computer free, family stuff going on, people visiting, a weekend trip to Tahoe.  I owe emails and follow ups to certain people as well as catching up on writing.  However, I could definitely use more hours in a day.

Apologies and excuses aside, I have some ideas that are much bigger than I can probably carry out.  So let’s start and see where they go.

On Twitter, many people follow the #traveltuesday or #tt hash tag as a way to promote and encourage others to follow those who are on top of travel.  Something I did yesterday was post a #traveltuesday question of the day because, let’s face it, those of us travel twitterers don’t talk enough about it. :)   My question yesterday was “If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why?” (see my answer here)

I think I am going to try and do this every week.  The girls at zipsetgo have taken a great idea (Traveler’s Night In or #TNI) and run with it by coming up with travel tropics every week with 10 questions on that topic every Thursday.  So while the #traveltuesday question of the week may not be as big, it gets travelers talking to each other and connecting which is an important part of the Twitter experience.

Is this a good idea?  Will it catch on?  I am not sure.  A few people shared their thoughts yesterday on this – NOnionsXPickles, spencerspellman and  FranciscoJenna.  Also, thanks to nomadicmatt (I think) who tried this a few times as well.  Will the question of the week catch on?  I am not sure but it’s an idea worth trying.  What do you think?  Will you participate?

My new idea is big – probably too big.  I have the idea of conceiving a website just for budget travelers to finds deals.  Yes, I know this has been done before.  However, this is where it gets big – getting hotels, websites, etc to partner with the site to offer deals just for those interested in budget traveling.

We all know that there are certain days to fly to save money and certain times of year that are cheaper than others.  Any way this idea could be incorporated into a website?  I don’t know.  It’s an idea but one I want to wrestle with.  I know there is a market for it but this idea is much, much bigger than I can wrap my head around right now.

I think it is a great idea, but the site would have to be different enough in some way than what’s already out there. You are absolutely right there are sites like that out there, but not many (that I can recall off the top of my head) actually targeting the budget traveler.

One issue I can see arising is that most everyone would love to do things cheaper (especially given the current economy) and the sites that are out there are supposed to be offering “cheaper” deals than the next guy. So, I am not sure how different it would really be.

By the way, I see you live in Folsom. I am in Sactown. I have been thinking it would be nice to have a meet-up group for Sac Valley area (if there isn’t one already). We could even explore this idea further in such a setting. Just a thought.

Hi Jeremy .. it’s a great idea.. and if enough people sign on for say a certain package (travel on the same day), there could be a further discounts! All worked in to the system. excellent idea indeed;)

To answer your question (from yesterday’s #tt), one place in the world to live? I’d say La Jolla, San Diego.. but then again I’m probably biased because my mate lives there and hanging out with her and her family has always been great fun! :) great weather, food and beaches (del mar is nearby too!)

Hi Jeremy, I couldn’t tell either if the #TT question of the week will be successful or not. But I believe that every idea is worth a try. You’ll never know if something will work or not unless you try.

Now back to your question: Where would I live and why?

I’d say Barcelona. Lots of great reasons. Here are a few…

I’d weigh in if I saw the question that day! :-)

Thanks for all of the feedback on this! I think the #TT question could work if enough people are interested in doing it. It’s like anything else on Twitter – the more RTs, the more people will see it and participate. But getting the idea out there is what gets it rolling.

Again, I just want to give credit to nomadicmatt for this idea. I know he has done it and I have seen questions here and there. I hadn’t seen this done in a while and not a lot of people have known about it. So I wanted to make it something that was done every week, like #TNI.

As for the web site, I appreciate the feedback on that. Yes, it would be hard to do. No, I don’t have the skills to do it right now. I am not even sure how I would get started. But it’s one step at a time and starting small.

I really appreciate your comments and feedback on this and hope the #TT question of the week catches on!
